This type of accommodation is for women who require additional support following the initial crisis period for an extended length of time (up to 1 year). It is sometimes referred to as ‘half-way housing’ or ‘exit housing’. Transitional housing is subsidized housing and is used as a stepping-stone to longer-term housing. DV West has a partnership with Wentworth Area Housing who provides the properties across several districts in Greater Western Sydney. These properties are suitable for women who may have already stayed in a refuge but have ongoing needs. Most women who are housed in these properties ‘transition’ from one of our crisis refuges to these more independent living arrangements, but referrals can also be taken from women in the community who have not been in a refuge or from other agencies where suitable.
The properties vary in size and location. Women enter into a tenancy lease with Wentworth Area Housing and DV West staff provide the ongoing support whilst more permanent arrangements are established. Women living in our transitional housing properties have access to programs, groups and activities that are conducted by DV West during their stay.
