Domestic Violence involves everybody in a household. Pets are no exception. Research shows a correlation between domestic violence and animal cruelty. We understand that it can be a difficult decision coming into a refuge if you can’t make arrangements for your pets or the pet is going to be at risk of harm if left with others.
DV West provides assistance in these circumstances with the understanding that it is traumatic for both the owner and the pet to be separated due to domestic violence. We have 2 large, sheltered dog runs and a cattery at our Blacktown/Hills refuge (for single women) with plans to expand this service to our other refuges. We can also help with referrals to the RSPCA Safe Beds for Pets program and may also be able to assist with limited veterinary care where necessary.
Your safety and the safety of your companion animals can be discussed with our staff.
